SOME THINGS TO THINK ABOUT
You may not want to accept it, but there is only a certain amount of money you can spend for your project. It is good to have that amount in mind as you think and plan. Your budget will affect the quality of materials, labor and of course the final product.
2 years? 5 years? 10 or 20 years? The quality of materials is a major component in this answer and your budget will help determine this. Generally speaking, the better the quality, the more costly but longer-lasting it will be. For example, galvanized metals last longer than wood, of course. However, preserved wood with regular staining and oiling will last longer than "raw wood", as they are both exposed to the harshness of our Texas weather.
There could be annual, seasonal, monthly, weekly, daily or even regular times for maintenance and sometimes financial commitments. For example, a deck or fence needs staining and sealing every 2 to 4 years. While landscaping requires watering, fertilizers/herbicides, replanting as well as trimming and pruning.
As you can see, there are many aspects to consider when planning for a project you would like to invest in.
